  17. <p>     Time was when an editorial frown in Pravda could destroy the
  18. career of a party apparatchik or send a dissident to jail. But
  19. the demise of the Communist Party following last August's coup
  20. and the rising cost of newsprint today have put the squeeze on
  21. the former party newspaper. With its circulation down from 12
  22. million to 1.3 million, Pravda announced last week that it will
  23. henceforth appear only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It
  24. may go out of business altogether in April.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     Founded in 1912 by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Pravda was
  27. closed three times by Czar Nicholas, and again by Alexander
  28. Kerensky in 1917. The once proud party organ last week lamented,
  29. with fine irony, the "planned economic strangulation of free,
  30. independent media."
